How to prepare the perfect guestroom

Turn your spare space into a hibernation-worthy retreat with this simple checklist for an oh-so-cosy guestroom.

Whether you’re putting up friends for a weekend, or hosting long-distance relatives for a whole week, a thoughtfully considered guestroom is key to making them feel right at home. Start with the essentials – a comfortable bed and great sheets are a must – and then add in some extra touches - a scented candle, stylish bedside lamp or snuggly bed socks go a long way to creating a welcoming and cosy space.

Bringing loved ones together is a real joy, but even if you’re the hostess-with-the-mostest, hosting can feel a little stressful at times. So, ahead of the holiday season, here are some simple tips to keep things as fuss-free as possible, from the team of home lovers at Piglet in Bed…

1. Create the comfiest foundation

First and foremost, you want your guests to have a good night’s sleep, so a comfy bed is essential. Test out your spare mattress ahead of any hosting. If it’s sagging or feeling a little lumpy, adding a mattress topper will make all the difference. They’re ideal for adding an extra layer of comfort, and natural mattress toppers – like those made from merino wool – also help regulate body temperature for a more restful slumber.

    2. Opt for low-maintenance sheets

Hosting overnight guests means more bedding and towels on the laundry pile. While extra washing is unavoidable, there are ways to reduce your household chores. Ironing bed linens is one task you definitely don’t need on your Christmas to-do list. That’s why linen or linen blend bedding is the perfect low-maintenance choice because its relaxed, naturally creased texture looks its best un-ironed. For a simple hotel-style finish, place some fresh towels on the end of the bed in a few different sizes.

    3. Add thoughtful extras

It’s the little touches that truly make someone’s stay special. Place a few items on the bedside table to make your guests feel comfortable, including a carafe of drinking water, a scented candle or pillow mist, and a basket of late-night snacks. Choose a lovely table lamp to create a warm, calming atmosphere – great for adding an extra layer of lighting or for guests wanting to cosy up with a good book. A hot water bottle or an extra blanket won’t go amiss on colder nights, too.

    4. Provide simple storage solutions

Clearing some storage space means your guests can keep their clothes out of sight, and they won’t have to live out of their suitcase during their stay. Make room in a wardrobe or chest of drawers, or consider adding a simple hanging rail or a few hooks on the back of the door. Even a little space in a bedside table can be helpful.

      5. Go all-out with a gift

If you really want to treat your loved ones, surprise them with an arrival gift on their bed. Think snuggly socks for padding around the house in, monogrammed sleepwear for snoozing in style, or a scented candle to remind them of their stay.
