Pooky lamps end up in all sorts of lovely places, but few are as unusual – or as wonderful – as The Woodsman’s Treehouse, a magical new glamping retreat in deepest Dorset…
Does a part of you yearn to live like Robin Hood – sleeping high in treetops, above the ground and under the stars, listening to leaves rustle in the breeze…. But at the same time another part of you rather likes comfy beds, piping hot water and proper flushing toilets? If so, we’ve just found the absolute perfect hideaway for you.
It’s called the Woodman’s Treehouse, and it’s a little slice of woody heaven. Built high in the branches of three oak trees, it takes luxury glamping to a new level (literally). There are open-air decks with a sauna, a hot tub, a barbeque, a wood-fired pizza oven and a hot ‘tree shower’. But even better than that, the interior is seriously snug – and stylish. You enter it via a vintage bronze porthole window, and once inside you’re in your own little private luxury kingdom.
There’s a king-sized bed, a double-ended copper bath and – delightfully – a rotating fireplace that can be pointed toward the bed, sofa or kitchen.
And while you’re as warm as toast beside the fire in your thick socks, you can also look out into the woodlands. There are large picture windows set in the walls, in the floor looking down a stream below, and in the ceiling above the bed. And to cap it all, Pooky’s Wisteria designer table lamps are strategically placed around the treehouse. So imagine laying back on your luxury bed of an evening, surrounded by the golden glow of lamplight and gazing idly at the oak canopy above your head…
A pair of Wisterias as bedside lamps Not bad, eh? This splendid structure is the work of Guy Mallinson (below), the renowned ‘green woodworker’ and the BBC’s go-to carpenter (see the Mastercrafts series with Monty Don, Giles and Sue Live The Good Life, and Escape to the Country amongst others).
Guy Mallinson It’s lovely seeing our lamps being part of something so special and unique - and we think the clear glass and brass of the Wisteria is a brilliant choice for the setting. Guy told us: ‘After much searching for the right combination of metal, glass and shade to suit the quality of the craftsmanship and the contemporary interior of the treehouse, the Pooky lights gave us the perfect solution.’
Wisteria in the window
Guy and his crack team of craftsmen spent five months constructing the Woodsman’s Treehouse, the latest addition to the glamping facilities at his Crafty Camping site. It’s a magical adults-only holiday hideaway in West Dorset which also offers woodworking courses. The accommodation includes yurts, tipis, a shepherd's hut and more – all with luxury mod-cons and lots of lovely little extras. But of course, we like the treehouse best, and not only because our Wisteria has found a home there. Being one of Robin Hood’s Merry Men and living in the treetops is all very well, but doing so with soft beds, electric lights and indoor flushing loos is, we can’t help but feel, just that bit merrier.
