7 extraordinary things you can do with a glass table lamp

It’s amazing what you can do with glass, isn’t it? Mould it into flutes or urns or globes, combine it with brass or nickel, colour it or let the light shine through clear crystal…. Our designers have had terrific fun recently creating a lot of new glass table lamps to add to our range. Here are seven beautiful things we’ve discovered you can do with glass. Which is your favourite?...

1. Make a shimmering statement piece

Glass can be delicate, subtle, unobtrusive… or you can make a big bold statement showpiece. With the Salamander we’ve gone for the latter: a cut glass 43cm high centrepiece intended to wow. The colour is eau de nil (literally ‘water of the Nile’), which is that soft green with a hint of grey. We rather like it with a a monochrome shade (see top) - that way the base remains the star.

2. Use it as a paperweight (or a bedside lamp)

There’s something very pleasing about a solid glass paperweight – so we decided to make the table lamp equivalent. The result is the Katherine – a 13cm-wide bubbled glass ball with a brass stem that makes for an exceedingly charming bedside light. You’ll need a 16cm shade for this one.

3. Go green (and French)

Dark emerald glass: there’s something vaguely decadent, a little fin de siecle about it. The Cynthia is an old French design (perfect for a boudoir), but updated for a sleek contemporary feel. There are smart brass fittings set into the deep green glass.

4. Fashion it into flutes

The champagne flute must be one of the finest expressions of glass – so why not make a fluted table lamp? The Keneggy is two clear glass tubes connected by brass and set on a glass base. Very smart and very different.

5. Make it into marbles…

We called this lamp the Bonbon, as it’s made of a pile of clear glass roundels that reminded us of sweeties. Perfect as a bedside light, and goes with virtually any colour lampshade so feel free to be bold, floral or whatever takes your fancy.

6. Shape it into a vase

Blue glass vases are virtually always lovely and impervious to fashion. The Fandango is a blown glass vase in the very softest blue that we’ve effectively ‘lampified’ with a brass fitting and the result is this sophisticated beauty. We’ve paired it here with a yellow lampshade and that’s pleasing on the eye in a light, but it can also be a real showstopper with a smart black shade.

7. Make flamboyant jewellery

Finally, we did this. It’s called the Margaux, and it’s the table lamp equivalent of the most showy-offy necklace in your jewellery box. A large piece of rose-coloured cut glass, flanked by a pair of clear crystals and joined together with a contemporary nickel-finished brass atop a glass hexagon. Nobody else will have anything like it…
