Lighten Up! 7 fresh interior design and lighting ideas for Spring

Looking to refresh your home this spring? Discover 7 simple interior design and lighting ideas to bring in colour, light and seasonal charm, plus some special lampshade inspiration…

Winter's behind us (we hope), and suddenly everything feels lighter. Buds are blooming, days are stretching – and it’s the perfect time to give your home a little seasonal refresh. Spring interiors are all about joy, colour, and bringing the outside in… and it doesn’t have to be a big upheaval. Just a few simple touches can make your space sing with spring.

Here are seven easy, cheerful ways to celebrate the season indoors.

1. Let the light in

Spring means longer days—and more lovely, natural light. So make the most of it! Swap heavy winter curtains for airy voiles, throw open the windows, and let your rooms breathe. If you’ve got a window that’s not overlooked, consider leaving it bare to frame your view and flood the space with sunshine.

And while we’re on the subject of light… This is the perfect time to switch up your lampshades. Choose cheerful colours, playful patterns or soft florals to echo the season. Think blossom pinks, fresh greens, duck egg blues – light and lovely in every way.

2. Bring the outdoors in

Spring flowers are nature’s own mood-boosters. Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and narcissi—they’re easy to find and even easier to arrange. A few bunches from your local supermarket or flower farm, popped into a jug or vintage vase, and you’ve got instant spring style.

For bonus points (and scent), go for fragranced varieties like hyacinths or paperwhites. Or plant bulbs in pretty pots and watch them unfurl day by day.

3. Add a splash of spring colour

Spring has a colour palette all of its own—think soft pastels, zingy greens, and sunny yellows. You don’t need to repaint a whole room to bring it in. A cushion here, a lampshade there, a fresh throw on the sofa… even the smallest pops of colour can lift a space.

If you’re feeling brave, go bolder—an accent chair in leafy green or a piece of wall art in bright coral can give a room an instant spring awakening.

4. Refresh with texture and pattern

Spring is a time for lightness—not just in colour, but in feel. Swap out heavy winter textiles for breezier fabrics: linen table runners, cotton throws, soft pleated lampshades. Look for botanical prints, ditsy florals, and playful motifs that bring a smile.

Even changing one or two pieces – a patterned cushion, a rug in fresh hues – can make a big difference.

5. Embrace a spring clean (ish)

We’re not suggesting a full Marie Kondo overhaul (though we salute you if that’s your thing). But a little spring decluttering can do wonders for your home—and your mood. Clear surfaces, put away the winter clutter, and give everything a good dust.

Then stand back and admire your newfound space. Light-filled, flower-filled, and fresh as a daisy.

6. Try a touch of Scandi spring

Nobody does light and fresh quite like the Scandinavians. After their long, dark winters, spring is practically a national celebration—and their interiors reflect that. Think pale woods, white walls, sheer curtains, and a less-is-more approach.

You don’t have to go full fjord chic, but taking a little inspiration from Scandi style – like a simple pendant light, a touch of birch, or a softly pleated shade – can make your space feel bright, calm and ready for the season. Bonus idea: try going curtain-free on one window if privacy allows. The daylight transformation can be surprisingly magical.

7. Bring spring to the bathroom

It’s easy to forget the bathroom when you’re updating interiors, but it’s a brilliant spot for a seasonal lift. Add a posy of scented narcissi to the windowsill, switch in a fresh bath mat in spring tones, or replace tired towels with zingy new ones.

And don’t forget the lighting—wall lights or a statement lampshade (yes, even in the bathroom if it's safe and permitted) can turn a functional space into a little sanctuary. Spring should feel good in every room, after all.
