Anouska Tamony has been described as a ‘sparky emerging talent’ in the world of interior design. Her London-based studio Anouska Tamony Designs has been making a name for itself with rich, eye-catching schemes taking inspiration from an eclectic mix of sources including Anouska’s Eurasian heritage (and often including some Pooky lights!). We caught up with Anouska to ask her a few questions about style, lighting and interiors...

How did you get into interior design?
I grew up spending a lot of time in my grandparents’ beautiful home and took an interest in the mix of Asian and European furniture, art and antiques they’d collected. But despite being a creative at heart I originally pursued law and it wasn’t until my mid 20s that I embarked on training to be a designer at KLC at Chelsea Harbour - I spread my wings soon after to pursue my passion for interior design wholeheartedly.

How would you describe your interior design style?
Colourful, thoughtful and with a bohemian bent inspired by cultures near and far. A little romance is also important and whether I’m designing a contemporary or classic space for a client I will always try to include a memento or reference that sparks emotion beyond surface pleasure.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Visual styles that have had a lasting impact on me are Art Deco, Chinoiserie and Modernism but my sources of inspiration are much wider and more random, and of course, very much influenced by my clients. One of the most creative projects I’ve worked on was a Jules Verne-inspired home for a writer and her family earlier this year.

How does lighting play a part in your interiors?
As every designer will say, lighting is hugely important and creates atmosphere and dimension to spaces. Lighting fixtures and accent lighting are also a brilliant way to incorporate themes into a space, either harmonising and binding aesthetic elements or adding unexpected quirks of colour, shape and style to a room.
Do you have a particular favourite cosy corner or room that you feel is 'all your own'? Or do you have any tips for creating a 'cosy' space?
The cosy corner in my profile picture (top) is one of my favourites but I had to hand it back to my client! The Pooky table lamp perched at the end of sofa creates a perfect cosy corner for curling up and reading a book on a rainy afternoon. Plump cushions, a warm blanket, a scented candle and a cup of tea are all else that’s needed. Maybe a biscuit too.
Which recent projects are you particularly proud of?
I really enjoyed the Jules Verne project. The client asked me to push her outside of her comfort zone and ended up doing so zealously with only a gentle nudge needed from me! We were particularly pleased with the sitting room (below), its dusky pink walls and red velvet curtains creating a perfectly cosy cocoon especially at this time of year.

Finally we’ve got to ask you, what is your favourite Pooky light and why? I’ve got my beady eyes on your Starsky chandelier. Its snazzy 70s luxe vibe is just delicious.
